The new voices fellowship is a year-long program dedicated to development experts from developing countries such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The program provides them with intensive advocacy and media training, and help them improve their message, focus their media targets, elevate their stories, and communicate their perceptions across a variety of media platforms. Subject fields of interest include climate change, food security, poverty alleviation, and other themes.
Eligibility:
The fellowship selects 25 fellows who meet the following criteria:
- Development experts in areas like food security, human rights, global health, and climate change. For the 2021 class, special consideration will be given to applicants whose work will be about covid-19.
- Candidate need to have significant professional achievement and wants to share their ideas on global development with an international audience.
- Applicants need to be able to stay committed to writing opinion articles, speaking in international conferences, and participating in an interview with the media, even though this is a non-resident and not a full-time fellowship.
Fellowship Value:
The fellowship is fully funded, and sometimes it also covers fellows’ participation in activities and conferences that are related to media.
The Fellowship Year At a Glance:
February Key In-Person Training:
- The candidates meet in Nairobi, Kenya for a week-long intensive media and advocacy boot camp.
March – May
- Fellows complete their one-on-one remote work together with their selected mentor. They both focus on the Fellow’s customized program goals.
June Key In-Person Training
- Candidates meet in Aspen, Colorado for the Aspen Ideas: Health Festival and story-telling training.
July – September
- Remote work continues as the participants receive support to write, pitch, and publish OpEds, complete media appearances, advocate for their work and broader policy change, and share their stories with targeted audiences.
October Key In-Person Training
- The participants meet in Washington, DC for the Aspen Institute’s foundational seminar program. Candidates will get to explore advance advocacy strategies and prepare for their futures as Senior Fellows.
November – January
- Participants will receive continued support from their mentor until the announcement of the next class. By then, fellows graduate to become senior fellows and receive continued guidance and support from the new voices alumni coordinators.
