The University of Houston International Merit Student Scholarship is a scholarship program that provides financial assistance to international students who have demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding achievement in extracurricular activities. The scholarship is awarded to new and current international students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree programs at the University of Houston.

About the scholarship:

  • Host University: University of Houston;
  • Host Country: USA;
  • Study Level: Bachelor, Masters;
  • Scholarship Type: Partial Funding;
  • Eligible Countries: International Students;
  • Subjects: All Subjects;
  • Application Deadline: 15 Jun 2023.

The International Merit Scholarship is available to all undergraduate and graduate students. This scholarship can reduce the overall cost of attendance by $3,000 to $10,000 for two semesters. International students who hold F-1 and J-1 visas will receive the scholarship based on the residency tuition rate. However, the scholarship only covers tuition and fees and does not include other expenses such as housing, meals, transportation, personal expenses, books, supplies, and health insurance.

The utilization of this scholarship is restricted to pursuing studies solely at UHV. This grant, along with the waivers, remains effective for full-time undergraduate and graduate courses during the fall, spring, and summer semesters at UHV. The scholarship also includes a $1,000 guaranteed scholarship for students who reside on-campus.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the International Merit Scholarship at UHV, admitted students must meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate students must register for a minimum of 12 credits, while graduate students must register for at least 9 credits at UHV at the time of award.
  • Returning/current students must have at least two semesters remaining to graduate, and the semester receiving the scholarship cannot be the final semester.
  • Undergraduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, and graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Approval for volunteer opportunities must be obtained in advance.
  • Spring scholarship recipients must re-apply for the fall merit scholarship before the deadline (specified by UHV).

Additionally, international students or students on other non-immigrant visa status must meet the following requirements:

  • For F-1 and J-1 students, it is required to have the appropriate visa status on or before the specified date on their immigration document. In addition, attending the compulsory International Student orientation at Victoria or Katy is mandatory for F-1 and J-1 students. It is necessary for all non-immigrant status students to maintain a good academic and immigration status.

If awarded, the scholarship can reduce the total cost of attendance between $3000-$10,000 (two semesters) for undergraduate and graduate full-time study at UHV. The scholarship applies only to tuition and fees, and not to other expenses such as housing, meals, transportation, personal expenses, books, supplies, and health insurance. The scholarship award can only be used to study at UHV, and it includes the $1000 guaranteed scholarship for students living on-campus.

How to apply:

For new students, admission to UHV is a requirement for scholarship consideration. Incomplete admissions or non-admitted students will not have their scholarship applications reviewed.

  • International students on F-1 and J-1 status must attend mandatory orientation if they are new to UHV.
  • Must pay all outstanding university bills on or before the due dates.
