Description

Amish Poor Man’s Steak is a classic comfort food that combines seasoned ground beef patties with a savory gravy, baked to perfection. This budget-friendly recipe is simple to prepare, deliciously hearty, and perfect for family dinners. Pair it with mashed potatoes, noodles, or your favorite vegetables for a satisfying meal that everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup crushed saltine crackers
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for coating)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • Prepare the Meat Mixture:
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, crushed saltine crackers, milk, egg, onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  • Shape and Chill:
Form the mixture into 6 oval patties, approximately ½-inch thick. Place them on a tray, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • Coat with Flour:
Lightly dredge each patty in flour, shaking off the excess.
  • Sear the Patties:
Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer them to a greased baking dish.
  • Make the Gravy:
In a bowl, whisk together beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour the gravy over the patties in the baking dish.
  • Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is bubbling.
  • Serve:
Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve hot with your favorite sides, spooning the gravy over the top.

Notes

  • Chill Time: Allowing the patties to chill helps them hold their shape during cooking.
  • Gravy Enhancements: Add mushrooms, herbs, or a splash of soy sauce for more flavor.
  • Serving Suggestion: Pair with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
