Ingredients

  • 1 large round bread loaf (sourdough or artisan bread)
  • 1/2 pound shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped
  • 1/2 pound crab meat (fresh or canned)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (plus more for garnish)
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes for heat

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bread Bowl:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Cut the top off the bread loaf and hollow out the center, leaving about 1 inch of bread as a shell. Save the removed bread for dipping.
    • Place the hollowed bread bowl and its lid on a baking sheet.
  • Cook the Seafood Filling:
    • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, cooking until fragrant and translucent.
    • Add shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes, until pink and cooked through.
    • Stir in the crab meat, heavy cream, Old Bay seasoning, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
    • Lower the heat and stir in mozzarella and Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
    • Mix in fresh parsley and remove from heat.
  • Assemble and Bake:
    • Spoon the seafood filling into the hollowed bread bowl, spreading it evenly.
    • Place the lid back on the bread bowl and bake for 15 minutes.
    • Remove the lid and bake for an additional 5 minutes to toast the top.
  • Serve:
    • Garnish with more parsley and red pepper flakes if desired.
    • Serve hot with the reserved bread pieces, crackers, or vegetables for dipping.
