Ingredients
- 3 ½ cups (450g) all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
- 1 ¼ cups (300ml) warm water
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Mix well.
- Slowly add the warm water and stir until a rough dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead on medium speed for 5-6 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a round or oval loaf. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet or into a greased loaf pan.
- Cover the dough loosely and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes until slightly puffed.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Once the dough has risen, bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve fresh or toasted.
Notes
-
- Ensure the water is warm but not too hot (around 110°F or 43°C) to activate the yeast properly.
- For a crispier crust, place a small dish of water in the oven while baking.
- Store at room temperature in a paper bag or freeze for longer storage.
- To add extra flavor, mix in herbs, cheese, or seeds before kneading.
- If substituting whole wheat flour, use a 50/50 blend with all-purpose flour for a lighter texture.
