Ingredients
- 1 pound pork breakfast sausage
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- Pinch of ground cayenne pepper
- 1 ¼ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese or pepper jack cheese, divided
- ½ cup cream cheese
- 24 wonton wrappers
- Cooking spray
- Optional garnish: chopped green onions or parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart as it browns. Add cumin and cayenne for extra flavor.
- Mix in the cheeses by reducing the heat to low and stirring in the cream cheese and 1 cup of shredded cheddar or pepper jack cheese until smooth. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the wonton cups by lightly spraying a mini muffin tin with cooking spray. Press a wonton wrapper into each cup, ensuring it forms a small bowl shape. Lightly spray the wrappers to help them crisp up.
- Fill each wonton cup with the sausage and cheese mixture, then sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese on top.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until the wontons are golden brown and crispy.
- Let cool slightly, then garnish with chopped green onions or parsley if desired. Serve warm.
Notes
- Make Ahead: You can prepare the sausage filling up to 2 days in advance and store it in the fridge until ready to use.
- Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes to restore crispiness.
- Freezing Tip: Freeze the baked wonton cups in a single layer, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container. Reheat at 375°F until warmed through.
- Customization: Try swapping out the sausage for chorizo, adding diced jalapeños for a spicy kick, or using different cheeses for a unique twist.
