Ingredients

  • For the Salisbury Steaks:

    • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tsp garlic powder
    • 1 tsp onion powder
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper
    • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)

  • For the Mushroom Gravy:

    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
    • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
    • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra umami)
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper
    • 1/4 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  • Make the Salisbury Steaks:

    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • Mix until just combined (don’t overwork the meat).
    • Shape mixture into 4 oval patties.
  • Cook the Steaks:

    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned.
    • Remove steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  • Prepare the Mushroom Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Add sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened (about 5 minutes).
    • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
    • Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer until the gravy thickens (around 3-4 minutes).
  • Combine & Serve:

    • Return Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer for another 10 minutes.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • Ground Turkey Option: You can substitute beef with ground turkey for a leaner version.
  • Make Ahead: The patties can be formed a day ahead and kept in the fridge.
  • Freezing Tip: Cooked Salisbury steaks freeze well! Store in an airtight container with gravy for up to 2 months.
  • Extra Flavor: A splash of red wine added to the gravy elevates the taste.
