Ingredients

  • For the Meatballs:

    • 1 lb ground beef
    • 1/2 lb ground pork
    • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1/4 cup milk
    • 1 egg
    • 1 small onion, grated or finely chopped
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 2 tablespoons butter or oil for frying
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix breadcrumbs and milk. Let it soak for 5 minutes.
  • Add ground beef, ground pork, egg, onion, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined.
  • Roll into small meatballs.
  • Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8–10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth. Add cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  • Return the meatballs to the pan and coat them in the gravy. Simmer for another 3–4 minutes.
  • Serve hot, garnished with parsley, over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Notes

  • You can use all beef if you don’t have pork.
  • Add a splash of soy sauce for deeper umami.
  • For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for the cream.
