Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/2 tsp white pepper
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1/2 tsp red food coloring (optional)
Instructions
-
Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, honey, oyster sauce, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, sesame oil, five-spice powder, white pepper, ketchup, garlic, ginger, and food coloring (if using). Coat the chicken thoroughly and marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
-
Preheat & Prepare: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.
-
Roast: Arrange the chicken on the rack, discarding excess marinade. Roast for 20 minutes.
-
Caramelize: Brush extra honey over the chicken, then broil for 3-5 minutes until the surface is glossy and slightly charred.
-
Rest & Serve: Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables.
Notes
- For extra charred flavor, grill the chicken instead of broiling.
- Storage Tip: Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a pan or oven.
- Substitutions: Swap chicken thighs for chicken breasts, but adjust cooking time accordingly.
