Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • Frosting: 8 oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup butter, 4 cups powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans.

  • In a bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.

  • Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.

  • Mix in buttermilk, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar.

  • Gradually add dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

  • Divide batter between pans and bake for 25–30 minutes.

  • Let cool completely. Frost with cream cheese frosting.
