Description

Spicy Chicken Dhansak is a flavorful and hearty dish that combines tender chicken with lentils and spices, creating a delicious meal that is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup red lentils, rinsed
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1 cup spinach, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add the chicken pieces to the pot and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle in the turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam masala, and red chili powder. Stir well to coat the chicken and cook for another 2 minutes.
  5. Add the rinsed red lentils, chicken broth, and chopped tomato to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the chicken is cooked through.
  6. Stir in the chopped spinach and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Season with salt and lemon juice to taste.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken with diced sweet potatoes or cauliflower.
  • Serve with basmati rice or naan for a complete meal.
  • Adjust the spice level by adding more or less chili powder based on your preference.
