The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a scholarship program funded by the Government of Ontario, Canada, for students who are pursuing graduate studies in a wide range of disciplines at the University of Toronto. The scholarship is intended to support students who have demonstrated academic excellence and are committed to pursuing research in their chosen field of study.
The OGS is a merit-based scholarship and is awarded based on academic achievement. The scholarship is awarded to students who have a high academic standing and who have demonstrated research potential. The value of the scholarship is up to $15,000 per year and can be awarded for a maximum of two or three years, depending on the length of the program.

The OGS provides $5,000 per session to its recipients. As a result, they have the potential to obtain $10,000 over two consecutive sessions or $15,000 over three consecutive sessions. Additionally, the graduate unit that awards the scholarship will contribute one-third of the total award amount received by the student.
The scholarship is valid for one year, which means it covers two consecutive or three academic sessions. The awarding graduate unit will determine the value and duration of each OGS scholarship, which will be specified in the offer letter.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for the OGS, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) by the student deadline set by the graduate unit. International students with a valid study permit may also be eligible, subject to a limited number of awards.
- Exception for COVID-19: International graduate students currently registered who have not been able to obtain a study permit due to COVID-19 circumstances may still apply, but must have a valid study permit to hold the award.
- Be registered or planning to register full-time in an eligible program at the University of Toronto for the 2023-2024 academic year.
- An eligible program is defined as a full-time program of study at the University of Toronto leading to a graduate degree, consisting of two or three terms. Full-time students must be enrolled in at least 60% of a full course load (40% for students with a permanent disability) as defined by their institution. Program eligibility is determined by each graduate unit, so students should check the unit’s information to confirm their program’s eligibility for the OGS competition.
- Have not exceeded the lifetime maximum of government-funded support or maximum OGS/QEII support available for their current level of study (see Maximum Support below).
- Have achieved at least an A- (or equivalent) in each of the last two completed years of full-time study, or if the student has completed two or more years of graduate studies, they must demonstrate an overall average of at least A- (or equivalent) on all completed graduate courses.
How to apply:
To apply for the OGS, candidates must submit their application through the U of T School of Graduate Studies centralized online application system to the intended graduate unit. Each unit will set its own internal submission deadline, which must be strictly followed. It is recommended that candidates review the OGS Application Instructions before beginning the application process.
After submission, the entire application will be made accessible to the proposed graduate unit for evaluation and selection.
