Scholarship Benefits:

At the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) initiative endeavors to offer substantial financial backing to exceptional PhD, DMA, and MDPhD students. Through this program, eligible students are ensured a minimum annual funding of $18,200, along with comprehensive tuition coverage, spanning a period of up to four years throughout their doctoral studies.

UBC’s overarching goal is to draw and nurture outstanding doctoral candidates, fostering a diverse community that encompasses both domestic and international scholars, and providing them with a stable and reliable source of financial support to advance their research and academic pursuits.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Four Year Fellowships cater to both local and international students and primarily target those commencing their full-time PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies, with the possibility of extending eligibility to continuing students. The specific duration of 4YF funding depends on individual circumstances, outlined comprehensively in the 4YF Guidelines, contingent upon the students’ sustained academic progress.

Outstanding scholars who achieve prestigious Tri-Agency accolades, such as Vanier Scholarships, Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships, automatically earn the distinction of being 4YF designates. For these distinguished recipients, 4YF tuition coverage becomes accessible, and they receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding concludes. This support is applicable for a maximum of four years, starting from the date of the external award or until the culmination of their fifth year in the Doctoral program, whichever arrives first.

Likewise, other exceptional individuals granted major external scholarships, and subsequently selected as 4YF designates, may also qualify for 4YF tuition coverage. Upon the termination of their external scholarship funding, they become eligible to receive 4YF stipend and tuition support, which lasts for a maximum of four years from the inception of the 4YF or until the conclusion of their fifth year in the Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

Application Process:

In order to be eligible for the esteemed Four Year Fellowship (4YF) funding, aspiring students must first complete the application process for admission to their relevant graduate program at UBC.

Applicants seeking admission to PhD, DMA, or MDPhD programs will be automatically considered for the prestigious 4YF funding, presenting a valuable opportunity for financial support throughout their doctoral studies.
