Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 40 minutes
Servings: 1 loaf (approximately 8-10 slices)
Course: Bread
Cuisine: Artisan, Homemade

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups 450g all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast 1 packet
  • 1 ¼ cups 300ml warm water

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Mix well.
  2. Slowly add the warm water and stir until a rough dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead on medium speed for 5-6 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a round or oval loaf. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet or into a greased loaf pan.
  6. Cover the dough loosely and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes until slightly puffed.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Once the dough has risen, bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve fresh or toasted.

Notes

    • Ensure the water is warm but not too hot (around 110°F or 43°C) to activate the yeast properly.
    • For a crispier crust, place a small dish of water in the oven while baking.
    • Store at room temperature in a paper bag or freeze for longer storage.
    • To add extra flavor, mix in herbs, cheese, or seeds before kneading.
    • If substituting whole wheat flour, use a 50/50 blend with all-purpose flour for a lighter texture.
