Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and thyme until fully combined. Form mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs.
  2. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides for 8-10 minutes. Set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook slowly on medium-low for 20-30 minutes until caramelized.
  4. Pour in beef broth and sugar, scrape the skillet bottom, and let simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Return the meatballs to the skillet, coat them in sauce, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle Gruyère cheese on top, cover, and cook for 3-5 minutes until melted.
