Ingredients

  • Lean ground beef 1 pound or ground turkey
  • Yellow onion 1 large, diced
  • Garlic clove 1, minced
  • All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
  • Low-sodium beef broth 2 cups or chicken broth
  • Tomato sauce 1 can, 8 oz
  • Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon
  • Seasoned salt 1 teaspoon
  • Smoked paprika ½ teaspoon
  • Garlic powder ½ teaspoon
  • Small pasta shells 8 oz or small elbow pasta
  • Heavy cream ½ cup or half-and-half
  • Shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Brown the Meat & Aromatics: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef (or turkey) until browned. Drain any excess fat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until fragrant.
  2. Build the Sauce: Sprinkle in the flour and stir well. Pour in the beef broth and tomato sauce, then mix in Italian seasoning, seasoned salt, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
  3. Cook the Pasta: Stir in the uncooked pasta, ensuring it’s submerged in the liquid. Cover and simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender.
  4. Make It Creamy & Cheesy: Reduce the heat to low, stir in the heavy cream, then gradually mix in the shredded cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth.
  5. Season & Serve: Adjust with salt and pepper to taste. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

    • For extra richness, use half cheddar and half mozzarella.
    • Swap ground beef for ground turkey or Italian sausage for a different flavor.
    • Use whole wheat pasta or gluten-free pasta for a healthier alternative.
    • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheat with a splash of broth or milk.
    • Add crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicier version.
