A cruffin is the perfect hybrid of a croissant and a muffin—flaky, buttery, and beautifully layered. These homemade cruffins are surprisingly easy to make and can be customized with cinnamon sugar, jam, Nutella, or even a savory filling! Baked to golden perfection in a muffin tin, they make a delightful breakfast, brunch, or sweet treat for any occasion.

Ingredients
  

For the Dough:
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk 110°F
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Assembly:
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter for brushing
  • ½ cup cinnamon sugar optional

Method
 

Make the Dough:
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Add warm milk, egg, and vanilla extract, mixing until a rough dough forms.
Knead the Dough:
  1. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Roll Out the Dough:
  1. Punch down the dough and divide into four equal pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a thin rectangle (about 12x8 inches).
  3. Spread softened butter over the surface.
Shape the Cruffins:
  1. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge to form a log.
  2. Slice the log in half lengthwise to expose the layers.
  3. Roll each strip into a spiral and place into a greased muffin tin.
Second Rise:
  1. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake:
  1. Bake for 18-22 minutes until golden brown and flaky.
Final Touches:
  1. Brush with melted butter and roll in cinnamon sugar, or dust with powdered sugar.
