Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon mustard Dijon or German mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram or parsley
  • 2 tablespoons oil for frying

Method

Prepare the Ingredients:
  1. Finely chop the onion and soak the breadcrumbs in milk for about 5 minutes until softened.
Mix the Meat Mixture:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, mustard, salt, pepper, paprika, and marjoram. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly combined. Avoid overmixing.
Shape the Patties:
  1. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a flat, oval-shaped patty about 1/2 inch thick.
Heat the Pan:
  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Make sure the pan is hot before adding the patties.
Cook the Frikadellen:
  1. Fry the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Use a meat thermometer to ensure an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C).
Serve and Enjoy:
  1. Let the patties rest for a couple of minutes after cooking. Serve warm with mustard, potato salad, or crusty bread.

Notes

    • Meat Blend: For authentic Frikadellen, use a mixture of ground beef and pork for a rich and balanced flavor.
    • Adjust Seasonings: Feel free to customize the spices to your liking, such as adding nutmeg or garlic powder.
    • Make Ahead: You can prepare the patties a day in advance and store them in the refrigerator.
    • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven for the best texture.
    • Freezing: Frikadellen freeze well both cooked and uncooked. Thaw in the refrigerator before cooking or reheating.
