Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the potatoes into 1/8-inch thick rounds and set aside.
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add minced onion and grated garlic, sautéing until soft.
- Stir in the flour, cooking for about 1 minute, then gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and thickened.
- Reduce heat to low and stir in Gruyere cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until fully melted.
- In a buttered baking dish, arrange half of the sliced potatoes, then pour half of the cheese sauce over them.
- Layer the remaining potatoes on top and pour the rest of the cheese sauce over them, adding extra cheese on top.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45-60 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
- Remove the foil in the last 15-20 minutes to brown the top, then let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes
Slice uniformly for even cooking and season every layer for maximum flavor. Use foil initially to prevent over-browning.
