Ingredients

  • 1 large round bread loaf sourdough or artisan bread
  • 1/2 pound shrimp peeled, deveined, and chopped
  • 1/2 pound crab meat fresh or canned
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped (plus more for garnish)
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes for heat

Method

Prepare the Bread Bowl:
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut the top off the bread loaf and hollow out the center, leaving about 1 inch of bread as a shell. Save the removed bread for dipping.
  3. Place the hollowed bread bowl and its lid on a baking sheet.
Cook the Seafood Filling:
  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, cooking until fragrant and translucent.
  2. Add shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes, until pink and cooked through.
  3. Stir in the crab meat, heavy cream, Old Bay seasoning, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Lower the heat and stir in mozzarella and Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
  5. Mix in fresh parsley and remove from heat.
Assemble and Bake:
  1. Spoon the seafood filling into the hollowed bread bowl, spreading it evenly.
  2. Place the lid back on the bread bowl and bake for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 5 minutes to toast the top.
Serve:
  1. Garnish with more parsley and red pepper flakes if desired.
  2. Serve hot with the reserved bread pieces, crackers, or vegetables for dipping.

Notes

  • Make It Your Own: Swap shrimp or crab with scallops, lobster, or even a mix of seafood.
  • Storage: Wrap leftovers tightly in foil and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C).
  • Prevent Sogginess: Hollow out the bread properly and bake it briefly before adding the filling.
