Ingredients

  • Cupcakes: Prepare your favorite cupcake recipe or use a boxed mix.
  • White Frosting: Approximately 3¼ cups.
  • Blue Food Coloring: To tint the frosting sky blue.
  • Gold Sprinkles: For the hidden treasure inside each cupcake.
  • Airheads Xtremes Sweetly Sour Candy Belts: To create the rainbow toppers.

Method

Bake the Cupcakes:
  1. Prepare the cupcake batter according to your chosen recipe.
  2. Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and fill each about two-thirds full with batter.
  3. Bake as directed, then allow the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack.
Create the Hidden Surprise:
  1. Once cooled, use a cupcake corer or small knife to remove the center of each cupcake, creating a small cavity.
  2. Fill each cavity with gold sprinkles to represent hidden treasure.
  3. Replace the top portion of the removed cupcake piece to seal the sprinkles inside.
Prepare the Frosting:
  1. In a bowl, mix the white frosting with blue food coloring until you achieve a light sky-blue hue.
  2. Transfer the blue frosting into a piping bag fitted with a round or star tip for easy application.
Decorate the Cupcakes:
  1. Frost each cupcake with the blue frosting, creating a smooth, even layer.
  2. On opposite sides of each cupcake, pipe three to four small dots of white frosting to resemble clouds.
  3. Cut the candy belts into appropriate lengths to form rainbow arcs.
  4. Insert each end of a candy belt into the white frosting clouds, forming a rainbow over the cupcake.
Serve and Enjoy:
  1. Present these delightful cupcakes at your event and watch as guests discover the hidden treasure inside with each bite.

Notes

  • Make It Homemade: Use a scratch-made vanilla cupcake recipe for an extra-special touch.
  • Switch Up the Surprise: Instead of gold sprinkles, try filling the center with mini candies or popping candy.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
  • Make Ahead: Bake the cupcakes a day in advance and decorate them fresh before serving.
