Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare your skillet.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg yolk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Cut the cold unsalted butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Create a well in the dry mixture and pour in the buttermilk mixture, then gently stir until just combined.
  6. Transfer the dough into the skillet and press sliced strawberries on top.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. While cooling, prepare the topping by macerating the strawberries with sugar and lemon zest.
  9. Make the whipped cream by beating together the heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form.
