In a large Dutch oven or heavy pot over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef for 5 minutes. Drain any excess fat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
Add the tomato paste and minced garlic, cooking for 1 minute. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper.
Fill the empty tomato sauce can with water and pour it into the sauce. Stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low, partially cover the pot, and simmer for 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
Serve over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta, topped with Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley or basil.
